 PRINCIPLES
OF HARM REDUCTION

At QuIHN, harm reduction is about creating safe, inclusive spaces where individuals are empowered to take control of their health and well-being. We understand that substance use is a part of our world, and we are committed to reducing the risks associated with it by providing free, confidential services.

Our approach centres on respect, dignity, and a non-judgmental attitude towards the people we serve. By focusing on safety, we strive to support individuals in making informed choices that can improve their quality of life.

CORE PRINCIPLES OF HARM REDUCTION

At QuIHN, we embrace a broad range of harm reduction strategies that include safer drug use, managed use, abstinence, and meeting individuals who use drugs exactly where they are in their journey. Our approach goes beyond focusing solely on drug use, addressing the conditions and circumstances surrounding it to create a more comprehensive response.

Because harm reduction is about adapting interventions and policies to meet the unique needs of both individuals and communities, there is no single, universal method for implementing it. QuIHN identifies several foundational principles that guide our harm reduction practices:

Acceptance

We acknowledge that drug use exists in society and approach it with compassion and realism. Instead of punishing or stigmatising individuals, we focus on reducing the negative impacts of use through practical, accessible solutions.

Prioritising Health and Safety

Harm reduction is rooted in minimising the physical, emotional, and social harms associated with drug use. Whether it's providing clean injecting equipment, Naloxone to reverse overdoses or support services, we place health and safety at the forefront of our work.

Respect

We believe in every individual's right to make choices about their health. Our role is to provide the tools, resources, and knowledge to reduce harm in a way that makes sense for their unique circumstances.

Building Relationships, Not Barriers

Trust and understanding are key to our approach. We work collaboratively with individuals, fostering relationships based on respect, openness, and support to achieve healthier outcomes.

Advocacy for Change

QuIHN is also committed to advocating for policies that support harm reduction. We stand with our community to challenge stigma, promote inclusivity, and push for better health outcomes for all people affected by substance use.

GET INVOLVED

You can help make a difference by supporting QuIHN’s harm reduction initiatives. Whether it’s volunteering, making a donation, or advocating for change, there are many ways to get involved.

Join us in our mission to create safer, healthier communities for everyone. Let’s work together to reduce harm and promote well-being, one step at a time.

Support us in providing health services for people who use drugs and alcohol throughout Queensland. QuIHN works from a harm minimisation framework with a particular focus on harm reduction.
