QuIHN Stages of  Change

At QuIHN, we understand that change doesn’t happen overnight. Behaviour change is a gradual process, and the Stages of Change Model (also called the trans-theoretical model) helps us guide and support individuals through their unique journey.

It’s important to remember that progress isn’t always linear. You might move between stages or even be in two stages at once, and that’s okay. What matters is that each step forward gives you new insights, experiences, and opportunities for growth.

THE STAGES OF CHANGE

Pre-Contemplation

At this stage, people are not yet seriously thinking about making a change. They may not see their current behaviours as problematic, and any pressure from others to stop can lead to defensiveness. Support is often not sought at this stage, as the individual may not recognise the need for change.

Contemplation

In this stage, people begin to reflect on the consequences of their behaviours. They weigh the pros and cons of continuing their actions but may feel ambivalent about change. This is the start of awareness, but decisions may still feel uncertain.

Preparation

During preparation, people make the commitment to change. They start expressing their desire to change and explore available resources and support. It’s a crucial phase for asking questions, gathering information, and considering the most appropriate course of action to take.

Action

This stage is about determination and taking steps toward the goal. People in the action phase are actively working on behaviour change, using new techniques, and building momentum toward their desired outcome. It’s a time of growth and self-empowerment.

Maintenance

In the maintenance stage, the focus shifts to sustaining the changes made. It’s about using the skills learned to stay on track and avoid slipping back into old habits. Challenges may arise, so it’s important to keep reflecting on progress and celebrating successes.

Relapse

Relapse can happen, and that’s part of the journey. It’s normal to move back and forth between stages—what’s important is recognising that each time you re-engage with the process, you bring more experience and resilience.

SUPPORTING YOU THROUGH CHANGE

At QuIHN, we’re here to provide guidance and support at every stage of change. Whether you’re just starting to think about making changes or are well into the process, our services are designed to meet you where you are.
